CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - Nearby apartments were evacuated and a local school canceled classes for the day, but there were no reports of injuries after a four-alarm fire at a Central Falls construction company.

The fire at a company storage garage was reported at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire Chief Robert Bradley Jr. says the blaze generated heavy smoke and a hazardous materials crew was called in as a precaution because the contents of the garage were not immediately clear and there was some concern over toxic fumes.

The building’s roof collapsed and Bradley says it appears to be a total loss.

The cause remains under investigation.
