FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Crews have begun tearing down the only surviving Fort Hood building to predate the Central Texas post.
Demolition began Tuesday on the historic Reynolds House. A Fort Hood statement says a lengthy process determined the building was unsafe and too costly to repair.
The Reynolds family built the home in 1915 on one of their farms. The Victorian-style house had five bedrooms, a parlor, kitchen, dining room, butler’s pantry, carbide lights and a bathroom.
The Killeen Daily Herald reports that in 1942, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, residents of communities that existed on what’s now Fort Hood were notified to evacuate amid plans for the new post.
The Reynolds House was preserved and for a time was home to the Fort Hood Red Cross.
