SEATTLE (AP) - The Free coffee signs are returning to Washington state highway rest areas.
KIRO radio reports (https://is.gd/RMpoEI ) the 35 signs were removed in 2012 because state officials decided it wasn’t safe for volunteers to flip them over.
Local charities that served the coffee and collected donations say their income went down when the signs went away.
The state has allowed local charities to provide coffee at rest areas for several decades and there are lighted signs in some places, but not all. Department of Transportation officials say the lighted signs are too expensive to install everywhere.
Now they have found a new solution: a new sign that doesn’t have to be opened or closed has been installed at 13 of the most popular free coffee rest areas.
