PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Police in Portsmouth are investigating the death of a man shortly after he was taken into custody.

Detective Misty Holley says Portsmouth police arrested the man on an outstanding warrant and he was turned over to Portsmouth sheriff’s deputies at the city jail early Monday.

Media outlets report Holley says deputies noticed the man began having a medical emergency. Deputies rendered aid to the man, who was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police did not immediately release the man’s name Monday.

Holley says the investigating is ongoing and a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
