SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. (AP) - Patriot Coal Corp. has promoted Michael D. Day to the new position of executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Patriot says Day will assume a greater role in corporate business planning and decision making in his expanded position. Previously he served as Patriot’s executive vice president.

Day will retain his current oversight responsibility for all of Patriot’s operations, in addition to safety, engineering, purchasing and maintenance roles.

He will report to Patriot President and CEO Robert W. Bennett, who was named to his role earlier this month after Bennett K. Hatfield resigned.

According to its website, Scott Depot-based Patriot Coal employs about 2,900 people and has eight active mining complexes in the state.
