JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon has approved legislation that will mark Sept. 16 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Missouri.

The Democratic governor signed the resolution on Monday.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the chest, lungs and heart. It’s caused by asbestos exposure.

About 580 cases of the disease were diagnosed in the state between 2001 and 2011.

The measure passed the House and Senate unanimously.
