CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Some community college students in North Carolina have designed weather balloons to be launched later this week.

The Charlotte Observer reported (https://bit.ly/1FFP6kK) that students and faculty at four schools received grants from NASA to design the balloons and payloads.

Students in science, technology, engineering and math have worked on the projects. The balloons will include barometric pressure and temperature sensors, cameras, radio transmitters and small computers.

Schools involved in the project include Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, Mitchell Community College in Statesville and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury and Concord.

The balloons are expected to go up to 20 miles in the air when they are launched Saturday in Troutman.
