LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed new emergency managers for school districts in Highland Park and Muskegon Heights.
The districts have been under state financial management since 2012. Snyder says appointing successor-managers isn’t his preference but it’s the most appropriate move “given the stage each district is currently at.”
Don Weatherspoon will become the manager for Highland Park Schools. He’s currently a consent agreement consultant for Pontiac Schools and formerly was emergency manager for the Highland Park district.
Steve Schiller will take over at Muskegon Heights. He consulted emergency manager Gregory Weatherspoon, Don Weatherspoon’s brother who was managing both the Muskegon Heights and Highland Park districts for a year-and-a-half.
The governor says there’s been progress improving the educational experience for students but continued oversight is necessary to address financial emergencies.
