BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - New River Valley leaders are joining together to push for extending passenger rail service to the region.
Organizers on Tuesday announced the formation of a group called New River Valley 2020: Putting Passengers on Track. The group will work to bring passenger rail service to the region by 2020.
The group’s members include officials from Montgomery and Pulaski counties, the towns of Pulaski, Christiansburg and Blacksburg, the city of Radford, Radford University and Virginia Tech.
Retired Virginia Tech Foundation chief executive Ray Smoot is co-chairing the group’s steering committee. Smoot says in a news release that the group believes it can show there’s enough demand to extend passenger rail service to the region.
