STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - Northbound traffic has reopened on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County after a sinkhole was repaired.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says the sinkhole occurred Sunday near the 284 mile marker. Repairs were completed Monday afternoon.

VDOT says backups reached as much as 13 miles as traffic was rerouted from the interstate onto rural highways while repairs were made. A contractor completed the sinkhole’s excavation and filling before pavement was applied and cooled.
