ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York tax officials expect to reject $500 million or more in “bogus” tax refunds this year.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration reported Tuesday that $331 million in fraudulent or erroneous refund claims have been rejected so far.
Wednesday is the deadline to file taxes.
Cuomo says the state uses “cutting-edge fraud detection technologies” to spot fraud and identity theft. Some $450 million in refunds were rejected last year when tax officials determined the claims for refunds were either mistaken or deceptive.
The state expects to process 10 million returns this year.
