NEW YORK (AP) - New York City has launched a campaign aimed at ending infant deaths.

The Safe Sleep campaign will raise awareness about how to prevent injuries and deaths linked to unsafe sleep practices.

Babies should always be placed on their backs for sleeping. Blankets, bumpers and other soft items should be kept out of the crib.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that it’s part of a renewed education effort by city-run health facilities.

The city says about 80 percent of all infant deaths that are due to injury are related to the infant’s sleep position and environment. They say these deaths are also among the most preventable.
