ALTON, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a man who refused orders to drop a weapon has been fatally shot by an officer in Alton.

Illinois State Police say authorities were called to a home in the Metro East city around 5:20 p.m. Monday by someone who reported an individual on the home’s back porch.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The (Alton) Telegraph report Alton police officers responded and when they approached the 27-year-old suspect, the man displayed a weapon.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Mark Doiron says the man ignored several commands to drop the weapon before one of the officers, a 10-year veteran, opened fire.

The suspect, who wasn’t immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Doiron says state police are investigating. The officer who shot the man will be on paid administrative leave.
