CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Heavy rain and winds of up to 70 mph have left thousands of South Texas residents without power, canceled school and swamped some vehicles.

The National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi lost electricity and used a backup generator Tuesday. Forecaster Tom Johnstone says the outage came as the area received about 2 inches of rain.

Johnstone says nearby Rockport and Port Aransas (uh-RAN’-suhs) had up to 6 inches of rain, with gusts from 50 to 70 mph.

Corpus Christi police had no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

AEP Texas reported nearly 17,000 homes and businesses lost power, mainly in Corpus Christi. Several Corpus Christi public schools, along with campuses in nearby Taft, closed Tuesday due to no electricity.

Showers could linger in the area through Saturday.
