NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston International Airport is opening five new gates and extending its security area in a planned expansion.

The Post and Courier of Charleston (https://bit.ly/1yqwyYx ) reported that airport operations manager Roger Schwartz says the airport is becoming a round-the-clock operations and maintenance center. It had been closed between midnight and 4:30 a.m.

The report said the Charleston County Aviation Authority is studying a plan presented Monday that could add 19 full-time and six part-time employees. Most would be added to the security and maintenance staffs.

The additions include a rental car pavilion, new baggage conveyor belts and a two-story area for the Transportation Security Administration’s checkpoint and airport administrative offices.

Last year, the airport had a record 3.1 million passengers arriving and departing.
