TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A state agency is getting federal funding to map more of Arizona’s geology to help guide mineral exploration and for other purposes.

The Arizona Geological Survey announced Monday that the federal government has awarded $170,000 to the agency for mapping two areas in western Arizona and one area of southeastern Arizona.

The areas in western Arizona to be mapped are near Oatman in Mohave County and Quartzsite in La Paz County. The eastern Arizona area to be mapped is northwest of Safford in Graham County.

So far the state has mapped approximately 8,000 square miles, or about 7 percent of Arizona’s land mass.
