DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - The trial of two city officials accused of poorly maintaining sewer lines, resulting in raw sewage leaking into several homes during floods in 2013, has begun in Davenport.

The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/1GHxp9V ) a jury was empaneled Monday and opening statements delivered in the trial of Mayor Bill Gluba and Mike Clarke, Davenport’s public works director. Testimony was slated to continue Tuesday.

A lawsuit filed against Davenport accuses the city of negligence in failing to address its main sewer system, despite years of complaints. They seek compensation for damage from two major rainfalls in April and May of 2013.

Mike Baker says raw sewage up to his knee required him to replace carpet and furniture in his basement.

Defense attorney Rand Wonio says it’s not the city’s fault.
