MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) - A man shot last year by police after he was suspected of aiming a shotgun at an officer has pleaded not guilty.

Michael Yates is charged with first-degree assault, felony menacing, first-degree trespass and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. He is free on bond.

Attempts at plea negotiations failed and a 10-day trial is scheduled to start Aug. 17.

Police were investigating reports of break-ins of parked vehicles at a manufactured home community in Montrose in July when the shooting occurred.
