OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says it has rescued four teenagers who ventured onto Lake Ontario in a raft without life jackets or paddles.

Officials say a crew member of the Coast Guard station at Oswego was off-duty at a lakeside restaurant around 7 p.m. Monday when he noticed four teens in an inflatable raft struggling to make it back to shore in rough weather. The guardsman alerted the nearby Coast Guard station that the four teen were in distress.

A rescue crew responded in 25-foot boat, brought the teens aboard and towed the raft to shore.

Coast Guard officials say in addition to not having life jackets or paddles, the teens weren’t dressed to enter the 37 degree water in case of an emergency.
