WASHINGTON, N.C. (AP) - The geese hanging around a Washington park are getting to stay.

WITN-TV in Washington reports (https://bit.ly/1GHCS0z) Mayor Pro Tem Bobby Roberson says the city council voted unanimously Monday not to remove the geese from Veteran’s Park.

City Manager Brian Alligood said the city had received permits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to remove up to 50 geese. The USDA would then remove the birds at their discretion and they would be euthanized.

Health concerns prompted the discussion about removing them. Alligood says each bird leaves up to a pound and a half of solid waste per day and it’s become a health hazard. The concern was that goose waste is corroding the sidewalks and other structures.
