SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Prison officials are investigating what caused a riot at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville.

WBMA-TV (https://bit.ly/1D01V7o ) reports an inmate assaulted and injured a prison guard early Friday morning.

After the assault, all inmates were ordered to return to their cells. State officials sent an emergency team to the prison.

Corrections officials said inmates in a cellblock refused to follow the order and become unruly. Authorities said the response team disarmed the inmates who had broom handles and locks tied to belts. Five knives were found.

A dozen inmates were treated for injuries.
