VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A severely decomposed body found last summer on San Miguel Island off the Central California coast has been identified as that of a missing Sacramento County boater.

The Ventura County Star reported Friday that (https://bit.ly/1GYL2BE) 63-year-old Richard Martin Smith had been missing since May 28, 2014.

He was last seen with 57-year-old Monique Krewedl, of Sacramento, leaving a Ventura County harbor in a newly purchased 34-foot sailboat.

Krewedl remains missing.

Smith’s remains were found Aug. 8 on a beach by a marine biologist studying sea lions.

Smith and Krewedl had planned to sail back to northern California and family members called authorities when they didn’t hear from them.

San Miguel, the westernmost island in Channel Islands National Park, is about 60 miles from Ventura.
