SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) - A security guard was shot and wounded by a colleague in what police called a “tragic accident” at a South Jordan firearms training facility.

Police say the accident occurred Saturday morning as security guards were preparing to clean their guns after firearms training.

Officer Samuel Winkler says one of the security guards failed to verify his gun was clear of live rounds and shot a 24-year-old man in the abdomen.

The security guard was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, but was later listed in stable condition and expected to survive.

Winkler says the accident is a reminder that firearms must be treated as if they’re always loaded, and gun owners can never be too careful when it comes to firearms safety.
