DETROIT (AP) - Police officers are working with members of the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program to fight blight and improve safety for children in a southwest Detroit neighborhood.

The officers and volunteers boarded up about 20 vacant houses Saturday near Neinas Elementary to make routes safer for children. Volunteers also cleaned and cleared vacant lots.

Last fall, AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program members helped volunteers secure boards on houses near Clark Preparatory Academy on Detroit’s east side.
