PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police are investigating the death of a former Portales police officer who was struck by a vehicle while walking near her home.

Authorities say 30-year-old Kandi Davis was hit Wednesday night as two vehicles passed each other along State Highway 88. One vehicle hit Davis.

Authorities tell the Portales News-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1DTALEg) the driver said he didn’t see Davis.

Davis was a patrol officer who also worked undercover narcotics cases. She was a key witness in the drug trafficking trial of a Clovis man who prosecutors had called the No. 1 public enemy in eastern New Mexico.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb says Davis was scheduled to testify in five cases. Reeb says she doesn’t anticipate Davis’ absence will affect the cases since she was wearing a camera for each incident.
