ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - An historic lodge in Hatcher Pass near Palmer has burned down.

Firefighters led the Motherlode Lodge building burn Friday night because it was outside the fire service area.

The Alaska Dispatch News (https://bit.ly/1DwFtXc ) reports two fire engines responded but only to make sure no surrounding areas burned.

Alaska Division of Forestry fire management officer for Palmer, Norm McDonald, says there was still enough snow in the area to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby grass or trees.

McDonald says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The lodge hosts events like weekly jazz nights and weddings.

Casey Cook of Mat-Su Emergency Services told KTUU (https://bit.ly/1JgO9Cg ) there was no report of anyone inside the lodge or being injured. He called the fire a major loss to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
