PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix police officer was shot Saturday afternoon after a man called to report that he was surrounded by men with rifles.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard says when police arrived at Thomas Road and 20th Street around 4:45 p.m., they found only a parked minivan. The Arizona Republic reports (https://azc.cc/1yG08cA) that the man inside the van shot at police, who returned fire, striking the man.

Howard says the officer was treated at a hospital and released. The gunman died.

Neither the officer nor the gunman were identified.
