PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Officials at a north Philadelphia prep school say a football player collapsed during spring conditioning training with the team and later died.

St. Joseph’s Prep officials say 15-year-old Ryan Gillyard of Upper Darby collapsed shortly after warmups Saturday at the school’s practice field.

School spokesman Bill Avington told The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/1JgTKIN ) that the freshman was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Avington said he had been told that Gillyard was “a great kid, loved by his classmates and teammates.”

Athletic director Jim Murray called it “a sad day” and said people were “gathering at the school to be together.”

Officials said Gillyard played for the team as a linebacker and running back and also played basketball at St. Denis Catholic school in Havertown.
