HONOLULU (AP) - The state Department of Agriculture says U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents captured a venomous spider in a container of granite and flagstone from Brazil that was being unloaded in Honolulu.

The department said Friday agents sealed the container and turned the brown-colored spider over to entomologists. They identified it as a Brazilian wandering spider. The spider had a 3.5-inch leg span.

Another spider was also found in a second container from the same shipment. This spider was killed immediately by a worker unloading the container. The worker says the spider resembled the Brazilian wandering spider.

The Brazilian wandering spider is found in most areas of South America. It’s not established in North America.

Their venom can cause increased blood pressure and heart rate, vomiting, blurred vision and intense pain.
