CHICAGO (AP) - A 24-year-old Chicago woman has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after authorities say she starved two puppy pit bulls to death then hid them in the garbage.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1FVUAaZ ) Shantell Burnett is suspected of running a dog-fighting ring in her home.

Police say they noticed a foul smell after they were called to a home at 11758 S. Morgan St. on Friday. They say they found two dead pit bulls covered in urine and feces. Animal control took another puppy and three grown pit bulls that were alive but extremely skinny. One dog had bite marks on his face.

A judge released Burnett on her own recognizance Saturday and ordered her placed on electronic monitoring pending trial.

She could not be reached for comment Saturday.
