GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina authorities say they’ve charged a towing company owner with extortion for removing vehicles from a Greenville apartment complex, charging more than the maximum allowed and claiming the costs would be higher if police were contacted.

Greenville County sheriff’s deputies charged the towing company owner and two others. The Greenville News reports (https://grnol.co/1Ou1usO) the business owner’s name couldn’t be confirmed through warrants.

Investigators say residents of Crescent Landing apartments complained starting last month that vehicles were towed for reasons including a tire being over the parking space line.

Vehicle owners received bills up to double the limit local ordinances allow. Those who couldn’t pay were pressured to sign over ownership. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jonathan Smith says others were told the company would add a fee if they contacted police.
