PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state Department of Environmental Management is offering grant funding for projects that control aquatic invasive plants in freshwater lakes and ponds.

The department says grants will be awarded to projects that effectively reduce, control and manage the growth of invasive plants, leading to restored habitats and enhanced lakes and ponds. The grant money comes from a state environmental bond that provides funding for the Narragansett Bay and Watershed Restoration Fund Program.

Grants will provide reimbursement for up to 50 percent of the project costs. The department says they may be awarded to project sponsors such as lake associations, watershed councils, municipalities, government agencies and nonprofit agencies.

DEM says it has found at least one or more invasive plants in 88 lakes throughout the state.
