TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The widow of Toledo’s former mayor is taking another step toward running for election to complete the remaining two years of his term in Ohio’s fourth-largest city.

D. Michael Collins died in February after suffering cardiac arrest, just over a year into his first term.

His wife, 67-year-old Sandy Drabik, said this past week that she will set up an exploratory campaign committee to explore whether to make a bid for the mayor’s office.

Collins was an independent. Drabik is a Republican with a law degree who held leadership roles at the Ohio Department of Administrative Services and the University of Toledo.

Democrat Paula Hicks-Hudson, who became mayor after Collins’ death and will serve until a special election in November, already has announced her plans to run for mayor.
