CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Three people have been killed after a speeding car rammed the back of a tractor-trailer rig on Interstate 77 in Charlotte.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol told local media the wreck happened shortly before 2 a.m. Monday.

The patrol said the driver of the rig did not initially realize he had been hit and was dragging the car when he stopped for what he thought was a flat tire.

All three victims were in the car. Their names have not been released. The truck driver was not hurt.

Investigators said the car was traveling more than 100 mph when it hit the truck.

The road was closed for about three hours.
