PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - A 45-year-old Pascagoula man who used Scripture from the Bible to justify to a minor the sex crimes he was forcing her to endure will serve 20 years in prison.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1G0tPCr) Circuit Judge Dale Harkey imposed the sentence Monday, also ordering John Councilman to pay a $5,000 fine, a $100 special assessment to the Mississippi Children’s Trust fund and all court costs. In addition, the judge ordered him to serve 15 years of post-release supervision and to register as a sex offender.

A grand jury indicted Councilman on 11 counts of sexual battery involving the minor along with eight counts of touching of a child for lustful purposes.

He pleaded guilty to the charges on March 2.

Pascagoula police first arrested Councilman in April 2013.
