HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - Closing arguments are planned in the third murder trial of a man accused of beating and stabbing a Columbia County school teacher and setting him on fire.

William Demagall escaped from a mental hospital in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, two days before the killing in February 2006 and lived in a cave until he got a ride to the home of the victim, 56-year-old George Mancini of Hillsdale. He later told state police he had been sent to the house on a “mission from God.”

Demagall’s 2006 conviction was reversed because prosecutors didn’t produce the first forensic psychiatrist to examine Demagall. Dr. Stuart Kleinman had concluded Demagall was not responsible by reason of mental disease. The second conviction was reversed on similar grounds.

Closing arguments are scheduled Monday in Columbia County Court.
