PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have identified the man shot and killed in a shootout that wounded a Phoenix officer.
Phoenix police said Monday that 44-year-old Erik Tellez was shot Saturday after he fired a handgun at officers during a standoff in a park. Police say one officer was grazed in the shoulder while another officer shot Tellez multiple times.
According to police, Tellez was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.
Authorities say the injured officer was treated and released for a grazing gunshot wound and injuries received from flying glass and debris.
Tellez, who was wanted for a verified mental health court order, had called police to complain that he was surrounded by snipers.
Police say he had barricaded himself in a van when officers arrived.
