BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota State’s president and the Brookings County sheriff are among those who plan to walk in high heels for a fundraiser.

The Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter is sponsoring the May 1 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, which raises money and awareness toward stopping physical and sexual violence against women.

Men and women individually or in teams will walk for a little more than a half mile from First Lutheran Church through downtown. Anyone can walk, but only men can wear red high heels.

The $35 registration fee is due April 24, and participants are encouraged to raise around $100 in pledges.

Among those planning to take part: SDSU President David Chicoine, Brookings County Sheriff Marty Stanwick and the Rev. David Schoeld of First Lutheran Church.
