HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - The Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover Foundation has awarded scholarships to 15 high school students from across the country for their anti-bullying efforts.

The Republican of Springfield (https://bit.ly/1zB4E7c ) reports Biraj Adhikari, a Springfield Central High senior, won the top scholarship. Adhikari received a $1,500 check during the foundation’s fifth annual scholarship gala. He plans to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

The foundation is named in honor of a Springfield sixth grader who hanged himself after repeated bullying. Applicants are judged on academic merit as well as community service and a submitted essay.

Sirdeaner Walker, mother of the foundation’s namesake, was instrumental in the passage of Massachusetts’ 2010 anti-bullying legislation.
