WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A truck driver has been sentenced to three years in prison in connection with a crash that killed an Illinois Tollway worker and injured a state trooper.

Renato Velasquez of Hanover Park was convicted in February of operating a commercial motor vehicle under the impairment of fatigue, and two counts of failure to comply with hours of service requirements. Velasquez was also found guilty of several traffic offenses, including failure to yield to stationary emergency vehicles.

The Interstate 88 crash near Aurora killed maintenance worker Vincent Petrella and critically injured Trooper Douglas Balder. The two were helping a disabled truck at the time of the late January 2014 crash near Aurora.

The 47-year-old Velasquez on Monday apologized to members of the Petrella and Balder families before DuPage County Circuit Judge Robert Kleeman handed down the sentence.
