OREM, Utah (AP) - Students at Utah Valley University in Orem can now minor in autism studies.

The Provo Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1D7omZC) that the minor has been officially recognized by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

Autism studies director Teresa Cardon said the certificate is designed for students interested in working with people on the autism spectrum. She believes it will give them a leg up during their job search.

The minor requires five courses and an internship in the field. Cardon said it takes three or four semesters to complete and attracts those studying education, social work and psychology.

Cardon said Utah has the second-highest prevalence of autism in the nation and Utah County has the highest rate in the state.

The university is also fundraising for a proposed 10,000-square-foot autism studies center.
