DETROIT (AP) - A man beaten by a Detroit-area police officer says the prosecutor is showing courage by filing charges.

Floyd Dent expressed thanks Monday to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and others, a few hours after William Melendez was charged with assault and mistreatment of a prisoner.

Dent was repeatedly punched in the head during a traffic stop in Inkster in January. His head was bleeding when he was arrested.

Melendez has been fired as an Inkster officer, but he insists he’s done nothing wrong and says there are two sides to the story.
