PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) - The World Cup Biathlon is returning to northern Maine next winter.

Event director Jane Towle says she expects nearly 500 athletes and coaches for the event that runs from Feb. 11-14 2016 at Nordic Heritage Sport Club in Presque Isle.

The last World Cup event hosted in Aroostook County in 2011 had stops in both Presque Isle and Fort Kent.

Biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. While it’s a little-known sport in parts of America, biathlon is wildly popular in Europe, where millions watch World Cup events live on television.
