GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A 15-year-old western Michigan boy who authorities say tried to kill his 13-year-old sister in a knife attack has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination.

The boy made a brief appearance Tuesday in Kent County Circuit Court, where defense lawyer Charles Boekeloo asked a judge for the evaluation to determine whether the boy is competent for trial. The boy is in juvenile detention on $500,000 bond.

The boy is charged with attempted murder in the March attack, where police say he stabbed his sister multiple times at their home in Caledonia Township. He’s charged as an adult but he would be tried in juvenile court. The Associated Press isn’t using his name because of his age.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the girl was treated at a hospital.
