DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - The Dothan Police Department’s No. 2 officer will soon be its new chief.

City commissioners voted 6-1 Tuesday to name Maj. Steve Parrish the new chief. He began his police career in Dothan 30 years ago and now serves as the department’s second-in-command.

The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1J7u1WH ) Parrish will take the chief’s job May 1, replacing outgoing Chief Greg Benton.

Mayor Mike Schmitz said Parrish helped maintain unity in the police department when Benton took over as chief five years ago. Parrish had also been a finalist for the chief’s job then, but Schmitz said he “supported Chief Benton in everything he did.”

Dothan police officers and administrators packed the commission chambers Tuesday to show their support for Parrish. He received a standing ovation after the commission voted.
