DETROIT (AP) - The schedule for the Motor City Makeover spring cleanup and beautification effort has been announced.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan kicked off the annual citywide event Tuesday and asked residents to join other volunteers in the bagged litter campaign.

It will be held over the first three Saturdays in May, beginning May 2 in Districts 1-2. Districts 3 to 5 will be cleaned May 9. Districts 6-7 are scheduled for cleanup on May 16.

More than 7,800 volunteers participated last year.

People are encouraged to clean areas around their homes, businesses, churches and schools on the Saturdays designated for their neighborhoods. Motor City Makeover officials also encourage the planting of flowers, plants or trees.

Individuals and groups must register to receive bags and gloves.
