EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett says an anonymous donor’s gift of $1.5 million to the library is easily the largest contribution the city has ever received.

Kristin Shelley, director of the East Lansing Public Library, announced at an event Friday that the money was received in a lump sum on April 10. The Lansing State Journal (https://on.lsj.com/1P5NebM ) reports the library plans to use the donation to renovate or expand the facility, which hasn’t seen any major upgrades in almost 20 years.

Shelley said the library is launching a separate fundraising campaign to collect an additional $1.6 million to $2 million within the next year.

She said the library, which has an annual budget of $1.8 million, desperately needs to be updated.
