LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Officials with the Little Rock Catholic diocese have announced that St. Mary Catholic School in Lake Village will close at the end of the school year.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1bfyLLu ) reports the school joins a handful of others around the state to shut its doors in recent years when faced with declining enrollment.

The school was founded in 1910 and serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grades. The diocese said only 27 students were pre-registered for the 2015-16 school year.

The Rev. Theophilus Okpara said at least 40 students would need to be enrolled in order for the school to financially viable and to provide quality academic programs.

The school’s principal said declining population in the Delta is the main reason for the closure.
