WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man convicted of raping and beating a former girlfriend has been sentenced to 18 to 36 years in prison.

The (Washington) Observer-Reporter (https://bit.ly/1EpfHb6 ) reports that 34-year-old John Yocolano II stared straight ahead as a Washington County judge imposed the sentence Tuesday. In January, a jury convicted him of 13 charges including rape and kidnapping.

Prosecutors alleged that in December 2012 he lured the victim, then 21, to an apartment they sometimes shared. There, authorities alleged, he strangled, punched, and stripped her naked, tied her up and repeatedly sexually assaulted her over a three-hour period. She escaped when a friend came to the door.

Defense attorney Neil Marcus has vowed an appeal. He maintained that the sexual contact was consensual and the victim’s injuries self-inflicted.
