NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Police say a Newport News man has died after he was hit by a CSX train.

Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson identified the victim as 24-year-old Stanley Bernard Smith Jr.

McPherson says Smith was walking with four other people on railroad tracks on Monday night when the group noticed the train approaching. The others got off the tracks but Smith didn’t. One member of the group yelled at Smith to get off the tracks but the train hit him.

Smith died at the scene.

McPherson says alcohol is believed to have contributed to the incident.

CSX spokeswoman Kaitlyn Barrett says the train was traveling to Richmond from Newport News.

The investigation is continuing.
